A Short History of Backpacks
Backpacks are, simply put, a cloth or leather sack carried on the back and carried with one or two straps that go over the shoulders. Backpacks are usually preferred to other bags for heavier loads for longer time periods since the shoulders can carry the weight better. Large backpacks, those designed to carry over 25 pounds, offload the weight onto padded hip belts, which permits the shoulder straps to stabilize the weight. This permits greater weight loads since the hips are stronger than the shoulders and the weight is closer to the person’s center of gravity.
Backpacks, as a word, originated in the United States in the early 20th century and despite other permutations of the word continues to be the most popular term for this type of bag, although backpacks are referred to as packs, particular hiking backpacks.
Backpacks are typically worn by pupils, and are used carry school books and other things back and forth from class. Many children refer to these backpacks as bookbags. School backpacks are generally soft and only have a few pockets for holding other things. While very simply designed, these backpacks are now manufactured with pads, reflectors, adorned with school logos and designed with keeping proper posture in mind.
Backpacks are also an accessory. Leather backpacks designed for ladies are sometimes as small as a typical purse and are considered modern and chic. Particularly fashionable are one strap backpacks, also known as slings, which is a cross between a traditional briefcase, purse and or backpack.
Some backpacks are designed to carry high priced items. Examples include backpacks for laptop computers and backpacks for cameras. Laptop backpacks have a padded compartment for the laptop.
Backpacks are issued to soldiers and military back packs are purchased by people for rugged uses. These backpacks are external frame backpacks which area backpacks manufactured tied to a metal frame.
Backpacks are also well suited to be used as carry on luggage. Hiking backpacks are also essential for campers, hikers and other outdoor enthusiasts. In addition, backpacks are used for sports.
Large internal frame backpacks are manufactured specifically for hiking and outdoor activity. These backpacks are complex. Compared to school backpacks, hiking backpacks can carry much more weight and are designed to go around the shoulders and hips. Backpacks of this type have many compartments on the inside. Furthermore, you will usually find many external pockets as well. Hiking backpacks usually 3 feet tall and could be filled with as much as 250 gallons of water. Small backpacks are purchased for shorter trips.
Backpacks are typically manufactured from canvas, nylon, or leather. These backpacks are designed for the outdoors. Discount backpacks are purchased in the city for people who like to walk around urban environments because they are easy to carry around.
The traditional type utilizes a rigid external frame strapped on the back which a bag and other items. External frame backpacks are designed to carry 45 pounds and up. Wooden frame backpacks have been in existence since medieval times with the metal frame backpacks coming in the early party of the 1900s. To reduce weight, modern backpacks use aluminum tubes for the weight which are strong yet lightweight. The frame of the backpacks typically have supports, straps, pads to keep the load off of the body. This lets the wearer perspire better. The fabric of the backpacks is sewn into the frame but the frame usually sticks out both on top and on the bottom of these backpacks. At the top and bottom of hiking backpacks, there is now a space to carry bulky items like tents. Typically these external frame backpacks are less popular than internal frame backpacks.
Internal frame backpacks are actually useful for many things, but the difference is that the frame is part of these backpacks pack. A complex systems of straps works evenly distribute the load. The result are hiking backpacks that are snug on the back and are more easily maneuverable, but of course they tend to have less ventilation. Also, the internal frame backpacks have large internal compartments Internal frame backpacks used to have small loads and were not very comfortable, but of late the modern backpacks have really worked on these features.
Hiking backpacks are also sold without ANY frames and essentially they are just large versions of the typical backpacks. The advantage of this type of system is that it completely eliminates the weight of the frame.
